318 Coming Out Stories from Western Pennsylvania

Happy National Coming Out Day!

National Coming Out Day Pittsburgh
Created by Keith Haring

Today is the day we celebrate coming out – being more open about our LGBTQIA+ identities AND encouraging folx still “in the closet” to take their own steps. Sharing our own unique stories is an essential tool to offer support. In honor of that reality, I am offering this list of 318+ coming out stories from the #AMPLIFY project.

These are the questions we ask about coming out experiences:

Please describe your coming out experience. Where did you find support? What challenges did you face?

How would you describe yourself NOW in terms of “being out”?

It is important to remember that coming out is not a one and done experience – we “come out” every time we meet someone new who has been taught to assume everyone is heterosexual and cisgender.

You will read stories from folx who came out in the 1960’s to 2020. They came out in small, careful steps or burst out with vigor, both of which are perfectly legitimate experiences. Some had multiple comings out as their understanding of their identity expanded. And some are still not out.

It the responsibility of all of us to create a society where people can be out without fear or risk. If you would like to support the #AMPLIFY archive project or other work on this blog, please consider becoming a Steel City Snowflake.

And while it may not be possible to read 318 Q&A’s in one sitting, bookmark this post to revisit and share with others working to create a better environment for all of us LGBTQ folx.
