Lovely Page was a 62 year old gender nonconforming person living in Chicago. In late August, they were shot to death, but this only came to our attention this week.

A person was found dead in an alley after being shot in the Garfield Park neighborhood late Wednesday night, police said.

Lewis Page, 62, was in the 2700 block of West Wilcox Street shortly after 10:20 p.m. when someone fired shots, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police responding to shots found Page in an alley with six gunshot wounds to the torso. They were taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital and later pronounced dead there, police said.

That’s so very sad. Where was the outrage for Lovely?

Honoring Lovely

Lovely is the name they used on Facebook and how they were identified by friends. In all available photos, Lovely presents in feminine attire, jewelry, makeup, and hair. Lovely’s family describe them as a gay Black man. So it seems appropriate to describe Lovely as gender nonconforming until more information comes to light.

Lovely’s age has been given from 18 to 32 to 62. Given that a tribute video on TikTok mentions their children and grandchildren, 62 seems realistic.

Lovely was born and raised in Chicago. They studied at Crane High School and Rockwell Gardens University. According to a video, Lovely had two daughters and grandchildren. There are not many other details about Lovely.

Thus, we sadly acknowledge Lovely as the 34th trans or gender nonconforming person whose violent death has been reported in 2023. They are the 26th trans person of color and the 19th Black person.  Lovely is the fourth gender nonconforming person this year. A trans person has been killed in the US every 8.47 days in 2023. “Reported” is an important distinction to make as we know there are more folx whose deaths remain unacknowledged. In fact, we have included two unidentified people whose remains were discovered this year.

Rest in power, Lovely. Your family continues to seek justice in your name. No one should be left to die in an alley with little response from law enforcement. I am sorry we don’t know your true identity and hope that this post raises awareness to the reality that you were a parent, a grandparent, a neighbor, a human being, part of the LGBTQ community. You deserved better.
