The Crime

According to WISN:

In the early morning, Milwaukee police say they’re investigating a fatal shooting that resulted in an unidentified victim dying at the scene. It happened around 7:45 a.m. near 89th and Dogwood Street.

Investigators continue to search for a suspect and have not named a motive in the homicide.

As has been noted before, initial media and police reports misgendered Chyna.

Police say they’re still searching for a shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips.

Honoring Chyna

Chyna was born in Milwaukee and spent some time in Atlanta where she previously attended Atlanta International School. She was a choreographer. Her father Jonathan Long told NBC affiliate TMJ4 that his child was passionate about dance. “She is a choreographer,” he said. “Since 18 years old, kids came to the house, girls by droves, and she would teach them dancing.”

Furthermore, Chyna’s social media mixes personal updates with shares of the musical artists and mavens who inspired her as well as the music she loved. She also posted images of her many different hair styles.

Recently, on October 12, her family organized a vigil. Moreover, they set up a GoFundMe to help with her final expenses. According to Them, Chyna’s aunt told mourners that the entire family had been harassed by others for years over her trans identity, and additionally that her killing may have been a hate crime. “We’d get it all the time. And we would just ignore it,” Gipson recalled.

Thus, Chyna is the 29th trans or gender nonconforming person whose violent death has been reported in 2023. She is the 24th trans person of color, the 16th Black trans person, the 16th Black trans woman, the 18th trans woman, and the 15th trans woman of color whose death have been recorded in the United States this year.  “Reported* is an important distinction to make as we know there are more folx whose deaths go unacknowledged.

Rest in power, Chyna. You moved through this world with energy, grace, and beauty. Thank you for moving us all forward to a better reality, but the loss of you is not a price we are willing to pay. I am so sorry we did not create a world to protect and cherish you. Your family and friends will honor and celebrate your memory. We will all seek justice in your name.
