(Almost) officially a Gay Divorcée

The divorce has been settled. It will be finalized in December.

My feeling are complicated. My housing plan is uncertain, only some possibilities. I have to move out of this home by December 31, 2026 or pay $1600 (I think, maybe $1200) a month in penalties. I didn’t know that was a thing. Do not worry, I definitely plan to move out.

There’s no option to appeal. People repeatedly told me that my case was not ‘perfect’ enough to win. We didn’t get married in 2015, a flaw it turns out. The right to marry really is the requirement to marry. I did not think that was the case. I didn’t think the government used that standard to address the violation of our civil rights all of the years we were denied marriage. This is divorce equality?

They also told me an unfavorable decision would hurt the next person who had followed the requirement to marry in 2015. I understand that intellectually – you need good facts. But that doesn’t help me. I’m concerned about me. The appeal was my only chance to be self-sufficient.

And I gave it up. Yes, I felt pressure, but it was ultimately my decision. I received the best settlement. It just isn’t enough to live off beyond a few years.

I will spend the rest of my life asking for donations to pay my bills. That has been weighing me down, the dependency. When someone offers a support, they have the option to take it back or postpone it for a myriad of reasons. Dependency means you cannot push.

I’ve already had one person who promised a monthly payment simply not send it. Another didn’t set it up. I have to rely on a third party to prompt them. What happens when the third party tires of that task? Can you imagine the energy that goes into that?

Please do not worry – I am not in a mh crisis. I’m perfectly grounded and committed to my mental health. I will work my way through the sadness and figure out what to do with what I have on hand. I have a great MH team.

I am in a sadness and grief crisis as one would expect with a divorce.
