Do You Want My First Work of FanFiction?

Something I’ve missed quite a bit from married/partnered life are the special ways we acknowledged holidays, big and small. These are small rituals that carved out a space that was just for us in the midst of family chaos, community chaos, and general chaos.

One tradition was having sushi on holiday ‘eves’ – Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Easter, any eve would do.

Now I get sushi on grocery days. Giant Eagle delivers free to Manchester so I order my supplies and a $7 meal of Spicy California Roll. Fresh for lunch. I can be messy.

The other was going out for breakfast, usually to Eat’n Park on the minor holidays and sometimes the eves. Labor Day, Memorial, Fourth of July, really any Monday holiday.

Today, I went to Eat’n Park by myself. It was afternoon, but I did give the breakfast menu a gander. However, I opted for a burger. I like a good burger with crispy fries and that is not a good Uber item at all. Burger, cheddar cheese, lots of lettuce, and tomato with a faint hue of red.

Then I went up the hill to CVS where I picked up all the prescriptions.

This is a monthly tradition for me, combing a medication pickup with a stop at Eat’n Park. This weekend, I opted to do it on Monday (today!) to sort of reclaim a ritual. This is when I open up fanfiction on my phone and amuse myself with ridiculous side quests and rewrites. Today, I found a doozy of a story where Buffy is pregnant with Spike’s twins, he is ensouled, they get married, Tara is alive, and Riley/Angel are both taken down a peg or two. Even Connor appears. Gripping. Can’t wait to meet the twins.

In honor of Labor Day, I left big tips. Then I came home, took a nap, fed the colony cats, checked out my pumpkin vines, and fiddled around with my vlogging kit.

There are some months when I spend more time talking with the CVS staff and the Eat’n Park team than I do speaking in real time with my own team. Both staffs know me by sight now. That’s not so bad.

And in the spirit of creative labor, let me unveil my first and only work of fanfiction ‘The Grandchildren of Laura Spencer’ published in November 2019.

I already have a second chapter in mind.
