I am pretty fortunate that my psych med nurse is a nurse practitioner with a decade in physical health. He has a very well rounded approach to all things health related. He identified a cholesterol concern, put me on a statin and referred me to my PCP who essentially just maintained that level of care.
When we spoke about trouble sleeping, he asked a lot of questions and suggested I might be post-menopausal and benefit from hormone replacement therapy. The fortunate part was even better because the other NP had a background in endocrinology. My NP told me he had referred several people to her whose lives dramatically changed.
I had my appointment on Thursday, my 56th birthday. Jason had added the necessary bloodwork onto my recent labs so she had all of the information she needed.
I had a full hysterectomy (uterus and cervix) in 2018 when I was 47. I didn’t immediately go into menopause, but likely did during the pandemic when I was definitely not visiting a gynecologist.
Now I am in post-menopause. I didn’t know that was a thing, but it makes sense. Menopause is a phase, not a destination. We do need a full array of Lifetime movies of post-menopausal stories so we can get ourselves informed.
There’s no real way to close this blog post. I’m starting HRT. Let me mark the day.
But wait – plot twist – there’s a shortage of estradiol patches. My first order was delayed.
This is probably going to be a topic I revisit.
