This past week, I created a little reel about going back to school shopping in Pittsburgh. It sort of went south as a bunch of sad memories spewed from my mouth.
So I tried again and this time the memory is lovely. It involves my Dad and Mum as we took me back for my sophomore year of college. I was matriculating at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.
This is a memory that was funny at the time, but took on a life of its own within my family and among my college friends. The incident was in August 1989. Now that both of my parents have died, it is up to me to keep the laughter peeling and the knees slapped.
It would be easy to twist this story it into a treatise on air quality in Pittsburgh versus Northern Virginia. My father was a pollution-control worker in the coke plant industry. He had no delusions about poisoning the water and air. Regrets, yes. Still, this incident was not tied to that reality – it was just my surprisingly whimsical Dad.
