Her undergraduate claim to fame is a six month stint as an intern with then Congressman Rick Santorum in 1991. Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. She was among the first out LGBTQ people named to Pittsburgh’s 40 Under 40 in 2004 and is a graduate of Leadership Development Initiative Class VII. In 2015, she launched the #AMPLIFY LGBTQ archive in conjunction with a two-year artist in residence stint with Most Wanted Fine Art. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. She uses both her undergraduate and graduate degrees on a regular basis as a blogger and activist and regularly circulates her 1991 internship photo just to shake things up on her social media feeds. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

OK, I'm really feeling lazy today and kind of pissed off.  What is it with this disconnect between a 125 turnout for Dykes on Bikes and the very short notice on important political organizing events?  Maybe someone needs to tap into more of the grassroots Miranda Vey's of Pittsburgh and see what happens.  Or invite […]

PG Article on Obama and racial identity

PG Article on Obama and racial identity

Today's Post-Gazette has a very interesting LA Johnson piece about the cultural implications of electing a President who identifies as African-American, yet acknowledges his biracial (multiracial?) heritage.  Johnson interviews two local women, both with biracial heritages to explore this topic. The article is pretty interesting, exploring the cultural milieu of racial identity rather than simply […]

Dykes on Bikes Fundraiser a Hit!

Last night, Ledcat and I stopped by Cattivo for a fundraising event to benefit the formation of Pittsburgh's official chapter of Dykes on Bikes (www.pittsburghdykesonbikes.org).  We stayed for about 45 minutes and it seemed to be a really fun event.  Proceeds from the door and various internal activities will help cover the start up costs (forming […]

Update on Allegheny County Council Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

Update on Allegheny County Council Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

It is important that you stay in the loop to keep the pressure on our County Council to pass a good version of this ordinance.   You know the turnout for the hearing was good.  You know that the ordinance was referred back to committee for further consideration and no date has been set for a […]

You can convert my tv, but you can’t convert me

You can convert my tv, but you can’t convert me

Yesterday, Congress refused to extend the deadline to switch over from regular signals that have served us well since the dawn of the 50's to the new digital signals.  Do I sound bitter? Yes, yes I am bitter. Ledcat and I do not have cable.  It isn't a noble gesture of anti-consumerism.  It is a […]

Saddlebacking defined and more …

Saddlebacking defined and more …

Courtesy of After 8 Pgh comes word that Dan Savage finally announces the definition of Saddlebacking.  Hilarious.  Savage's explanation here. Courtesy of PageOneQ comes word that schools might be able to kick out students (CHILDREN) who seem gay.  Should be some comfort to Diane Gramley.  Also a wake up call to those who don't associated youth gay […]

Post-Gazette Op/Ed: I ‘m ashamed of my hate-filled fellow Christians

Post-Gazette Op/Ed: I ‘m ashamed of my hate-filled fellow Christians

Angelle Guyette lives out the faith she believes by laying out an impassioned argument against those within her Christian community who hide behind hate, intolerance and fear toward the gay community. This lady pulls no punches.  She trotted out into the cold to attend the Allegheny County Council hearing on the Human Rights Commission (apparently, […]
