Sue is the founder of Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents blog, established in 2005.. She has an MSW from the University in Pittsburgh and a BA in Political Science from Marymount University. Her undergraduate claim to fame is a six month stint as an intern with then Congressman Rick Santorum in 1991. Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. She was among the first out LGBTQ people named to Pittsburgh’s 40 Under 40 in 2004 and is a graduate of Leadership Development Initiative Class VII. After being fully and permanently disabled in 2010, Sue has continued to serve the community. She founded the Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project to address hunger and environmental issues. In 2015, she launched the #AMPLIFY LGBTQ archive in conjunction with a two-year artist in residence stint with Most Wanted Fine Art. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. PLC absorbed the #PghCatFolx projects. Also in 2021, Sue was the first person in history appointed to the City of Pittsburgh LGBTQIA+ Commission and was unanimously elected as one of three inaugural co-chairs. She uses both her undergraduate and graduate degrees on a regular basis as a blogger and activist and regularly circulates her 1991 internship photo just to shake things up on her social media feeds. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

Gender Stereotyping lawsuit?

Gender Stereotyping lawsuit?

Well, just found a little interesting nugget in the Trib site.  It seems a state prison guard in Fayette County is pursuing a federal discimination case based on gender stereotyping.  Yanik's attorney, Herbert A. Terrell of McMurray, on Monday said Yanik is alleging his coworkers sexually harassed him based on their perception of his sexual […]

New Pgh lesbian blog and changes to Cue Pittsburgh

Welcome to the newest lesbian blog in town.  It isn't new, new but it is new to me … I'm always happy to see more LGBT folks jumping into the Burghosphere.  Woo hoo! Linz the Lez Check it out. Linz is also the new lesbian columnist for Cue Pittsburgh where she is joined by Jason […]

Wuerl

Wuerl

The Post-Gazette offers up what I find a disappointing (but better than most) piece on Archbishop Donald Wuerl's handling of the D.C. move to legalize marriage equality. A glaring omission is the lack of voice of a single gay person from Pittsburgh.  Quoting Casey and Doyle was interesting from a national perspective, but what about […]

Mini Merge! or Why Virginia can provide domestic partner benefits while Allegheny County can't.

Mini Merge! or Why Virginia can provide domestic partner benefits while Allegheny County can't.

Ah, another small step toward Pittsburgh's consolidation with the County. Virginia is a very hostile place to be gay. Still, they appear to be on the verge of offering domestic partner benefits to state employees.  Meanwhile back in Allegheny County, Chief Executive Dan Onorato … isn't the least bit concerned about it. I guess he's […]

New York, Catholic Church and North Versailles …

New York, Catholic Church and North Versailles …

I just haven't had a blogging frame of mind this week.  Things have been happening, though.  NY government voted “no” on marriage equality.  The Catholic Church says gays and transvestites will never enter the Kingdom of God. (h/t Pam's House Blend) In North Versailles, some jerk punched a Wal-Mart greeter in what is termed a […]

Why The Manhattan Declaration rankles me

Why The Manhattan Declaration rankles me

The PG offers up a front page explanation why I dislike this project. This is the headline: Christian leaders vow to resist gay marriage, abortion This is the line that gets me.  The lines, rather. The marriage section decries heterosexual promiscuity and infidelity. It says that churches often failed to provide good models and clear […]

The Sakia Gunn Film Project and Pittsburgh

The Sakia Gunn Film Project and Pittsburgh

Last night, Ledcat and I attended the “People in Color” film series at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty.  We caught my first performance by Dreams of Hope which was simply mindblowing.  They really are a bright spot in the local LGBTQ community.  We bought their educational DVD which we'll hopefully be able to review […]

Turkey Week Musings

Turkey Week Musings

The Ravenstahls are divorcing (there's no legal status of separation in Pennsylvania).  That's unfortunate.  What's even more unfortunate from my point of view is that the Mayor wants privacy around his marriage, but doesn't extend the same standard to other people's marriage. I wish them privacy and that this is as painless of possible.  I […]

Wrap Up: Bash and Grand Opening

Wrap Up: Bash and Grand Opening

Thursday, I went down to 210 Grant Street for the official Grand Opening of the Gay & Lesbian Community Center's new digs.  The space is fabulous and the event was packed (hundreds and hundreds of people).  I ran into all sorts of folks from the hills and hollers of the region and didn't get home […]
