My Gay Divorcée Relaunch, Reboot, and Reset

What happens when you start with a birthday, segue into setting up a new home (apartment) and all during the winter holidays?

A wish list for gifts is in order.

You might be surprised to realize that domestic partnerships while not conferring the rights of marriage also apparently do not convey rights to property. Am I entitled to half of the gifts and items acquired during the partnership? Do we really need to consult lawyers to divvy up the sheets and towels?

Did you gift us with a premarital present? It is unclear who gets what.

I only wish I was kidding. I do not want to squabble over linens and blankets, but I can’t help remember the occasions and the love they were wrapped around. Friends, family, colleagues.

And I need things to move forward. I need clean towels, warm blankets, and books. I need my memories and my future stories.

So I created a wishlist through this website above – lots of ideas and suggestions. I am perfectly happy to rehome gently used items. So this is like a Pinterest inspiration board and a wish list. A registry?

I would be thrilled if you dove into your neighborhood Buy Nothing/Buy Not a Thing groups, your NextDoor, your own stash of inheritated household stuff …

My friend Diane gifted me with a Kcup coffee doohickie when I return to this home in March 2024. Each morning, I think of her when I use it. She found it on Buy Not a Thing. Sadly it is a bit worn so I’ll need a replacement.

I’m also rehoming my stuff. I can’t use a dorm fridge in an apartment so I’ll be donating it and other items through a local disability mutual aid group. People need to keep meds refrigerated. Clothes going to QMUNITY Center. If you have suggestions let me know.

Here are some of the main things I’ll need

  • A frying pan with a lid – I have a set but the fry pan died a noble death.
  • A handheld can opened with big cushy handles and knobs. Nothing spindly or delicate. No electricity needed.
  • Hangers
  • A table and four chairs.
  • Towels, Bath sheets, kitchen towels, decorative towels.
  • Pot holders, but very specific cotton holders that are thick enough to pull a blazing hot something from the oven. Not decorative, not worn in a spot where I’ll always get burned. This might be one where I go to the store myself.

Eclectic Asks

  • Bar cart – the space is modest, especially counter space. I have a few items I’d like to access easily. It feels like a grown up thing to have. And with wheels, I can move it out of the way if needed. What I’m thinking is any sort of rolling cart like a kitchen butcher block cart that could be DIY’d. Or perhaps you inherited a mid-century modern version from an aunt or grandparent? I’m not a big drinker, so this is more aesthetic.
  • Christmas/winter decoration – this will be my first holiday season as a divorcée without much family. My BFF’s are traveling for the holiday. I would love to create a festive festivus – I have a pink Christmas tree so that’s the theme. one benefit of this is we’ll have to go through all of the decorations to divide them. So I’ll know what I have. What I won’t have are throw pillows, wall decor, those cute little plug in neon boxes, etc. A bowl of pine cones.

Urgent

  • I am quite worried the Kcup pod coffee machine will wear out. I have no Plan B – Chucked my old regular pet into the erecycling a few years ago. I have two dysfunctional, warped French Presses that don’t add up to one. A French Press is hard on my trembling hands. I’m fine with a regular brew put except I have a lot of Kcups. So whatever you have extra, please consider this person who will definitely need coffee across the coming months.
