Each year, I dust of this song of empowerment that resonates deeply with me. This year, I was hesitant. Martina McBride originally agreed to be part of the Trump Spectacular and then backed out after public pressure. I don’t believe for a minute she didn’t understand the nature of the event.
The imagery of rolling the stone away has always stayed in my mind. I know most people think of Jesus, but my mind goes to Sisyphus – sentenced to perpetually push a large boulder up a hill only to see it roll down again. It is a symbol of frustration and endless useless effort. Rolling the stone from Sisyphus’ shoulders would be revolutionary.
So I made my own little tribute video, celebrating the strength, courage, and persistence of our trans neighbors. Every day is a day of reckoning because there are trans people thriving and flourishing. And there always have been.
