Our Official Trans Day of Remembrance Post for 2025

As you may know, I’ve been creating blog posts memorializing trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming victims of violent death since 2013. I use a calendar year rather than the Trans Day of Remembrance year. A TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names of those who died from October 1 of the former year to September 30 of the current year.

Using a calendar year made sense for me because I started midway through 2013 when a friend asked me to write a blog post. I’ve written almost 400 memorials since that day. It takes a toll as it should. This month, I found myself sort of stuck and unable to write a few recent memorials. I don’t know why, but there’s both no room to stop and no room for error so I have to figure it out.

To learn more about the tracking worldwide of this data, please read this Q&A with Anna-Jayne Metcalfe who maintains the database.

To get involved with the folx researching these and related cases of Missing, Murdered, Unidentified, and Unclaimed trans and queer persons, visit this Facebook group.

Reading over 25 memorial posts is a lot to ask, but not even remotely as much to ask a trans person to simply exist in this world. The ‘number’ is lower this year because we’ve lost access to valuable databases and algorithms, losses that throttles the ability to find these folx. Today, I was bouncing between two police departments in two states about the identity of one person and we did not resolve by day’s end.

This year also saw the loss of a personal friend, Elisa Rae Shupe. That’s particularly hard.

Of course I think you should support trans folx. But trans folx do most of this particular work. Support them, too.
