From Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities
The past (current?) year has been bursting at the seams with happenings. big and small. We hope you’ll consider a gift, either financial or in-kind to support our efforts.
As you know, we are a small volunteer-driven organization. Our accomplishments and successes are due to the hard work and commitment of the volunteers, work that typically includes lugging bags of cat food in all sorts of weather. So please think of them and their commitment. If you are interested in volunteering: bit.ly/PLCVolunteer
Our highlights from 2025 include:
- Adding 50 new households/caretakers to our pet food pantry, increasing our total served to nearly 100 households/caretakers.
- Through them supporting more than 900 aniimals, including pets and community cats.
- Distributing over 9,600 pounds of dry pet food and 4,000 cans of food.
- Worked with a local veterinarian to review our speciat diet food donations and determine how to distribute effectively and safely.
- Reunited four cats on the lam with their humans.
- Found multiiple cats/kitttens whom we vetted and places with rescues.
- Providing respite care for a cat of a local trans woman who cannot keep him with her in her housing program.
- Maintained the Fort Faulsey cat colony, including trapping Callie at 7 AM on Thanksgiving to get necessary veterinary work.
- Distributed 15 winter cat shelters and maintain a list of requests.
- Securing a $1500 grant from the Pittsburgh Pirates to purchase equipment including a drop trap, trail cameras, and other items.
- Organized a yearly community project on Betty White’s Birthday (Jan 17)
- Securing a $1500 grantt from GLAAD and $500 from PFLAG to launch a queer and trans media project to support tthe work to find Missing. Murdered, Unidentified, and Unclaimed LGBT+ people in partnership witth the Trans Doe Task Force and the Trans Violence News project.
- Getting social on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and BlueSky as @PittsburghLGBTQ
Your investment will make for an even bigger impact in 2026. Our work centers addressing gaps in supports, not recreating wheels or expanding existing projects. We now know there is a gap for trans and queer pet owners whose housing is insecure. We also know that storing gently used styrofoam coolers year round would be amazing, but logistically difficult, And we’ve discovered the items to make up a “lost kitty” kit that can be deployed quickly.
In 2026, we hope to connect with retail and wholesale pet food distributors for a more consistent supply of food and supplies. We’d love to get our donated shed installed at Fort Faulsey and maybe find storage for the styrofoam coolers at a local facility. Forging deeper connections in Manchester and nearby communities is another priority. We are working with homeless outreach projects to provide pet food to our unhoused neighbors on the Northside.
We know pet food prices will increase while supports like the Affordable Care Act subsidies, SNAP, and housing programs will decrease. In October we opened our service area from the Northside to the entire County in response to the SNAP cuts. Volunteers like Renee, Todd, Jannie, and Terri make it possible to reach households/caretakers in the far flung parts of tthe region every month.
Some examples of how your funding can be used
- $250 provides food for a year for one household/caretaker
- $100 covers one subscription needed for the trans and queer media project
- $75 keeps the “Lost Kitty” kit supplied and ready to roll
- $50 provides two winter shelters for homeless cats
- $25 purchases a 18 pound bag of dry cat food
We are also looking for five sponsors of our upcoming Betty White Birthday winter shelter day of service at $100/each.
Finally, $1500 will allow us to rent a storage unit to see if we can in fact collect styrofoam coolers to distribute shelters in bulk in the late auttumn. Winter shelters really save lives.
