This Blog Nominated for 4th Consecutive National LGBTQ Blogging Award #GLAADawards

Something that got a little lost in my wedding furor is this exciting news – Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents was nominated again for the GLAAD Media Awards.

The 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives.

We were nominated in 2018, 2019, 2020, and now 2021. We won the category in 2019. No blog has ever won twice.

My co-nominees are:

Outstanding Blog

Gays With Kids
JoeMyGod
Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents
The Reckoning
TransGriot

This is not a legacy award that is spread around to all bloggers. It is literally based on your content during the previous year – so my 2021 nomination will evaluate all content we published during 2020. There are no “turns” to share the wealth. A new entrant in the category is Atlanta based The Reckoning launched in 2017. That’s exciting – new blogs.

But I do have a preference and its not me. I would very much like to see TransGriot win and be the first ever blog to win twice. Founder Monica Roberts passed unexpectedly in October 2020 so this will be her last year of eligibility. Her absence is keenly felt. Her friends are relaunching TransGriot and I’m glad for that. I’m confident it will be important and good work, but it won’t be the same as pure unadulterated Monica.

Alternatively, I’d like GLAAD to consider naming the category after Monica or creating another category to honor Black trans created media with a special award. Just don’t let the opportunity to celebrate her important voice and her legacy fade into the background.

I am honored to once again be nominated. It is a bit surreal to turn 50, win two awards from the local Pride organizers, receive three proclamations for my blog’s 15th anniversary, be the first person confirmed to the Pittsburgh LGBTQIA+ Commission, and get married all in the course of 4 months. And not have COVID-19. Oh, and my student loans were discharged.

I am grateful to GLAAD for acknowledging the work that we do here at this blog. Pittsburgh media is shrinking rapidly due to horrifying Block family members, the pandemic, and more. But hyperlocal media is still here, still fighting, still speaking up, and still listening.

Blogging is still relevant (new blogs!) in 2021. Let’s see what happens …

For a full list of nominees see below or click here. Award recipients will be announced during a virtual ceremony scheduled for April 2021.
