Angel Haynes was a 25-year-old cosmetologist from Jackson, Tennessee. On Sunday, October 25, she became the latest Black trans woman lost to gun violence.
Angel was traveling to Memphis and stopped at a motel along the way. At 2:19 AM, police responded to reports of gunfire and found Angel’s body in her room with at least one gunshot.

Angel was born and raised in McKenzie, Tennessee. She graduated high school in 2013 and was graduated from cosmetology school with her license in 2018. According to friends, Angel had recently had some gender affirming medical procedures and hadn’t quite healed when she was killed. She didn’t even get to appreciate her health or the affirmation of her identity.
Angel is the 34th trans and gender nonconforming person murdered to date in 2020 in the United States. She is the 22st Black trans person and the 21st Black trans woman murdered. She is one of 13 victims age 25 or younger.
I probably will always think about Monica Roberts in these posts. My lens is different than hers, but I hope to channel her outrage and defiance on behalf of these victims.
Angel’s family and friends organized a vigil for her on October 30 in Jackson. They’ve also organized a crowdfund to help with her final expenses – please note that the organizer deadnames Angel.
