Be Part of Our Face Mask Reviews and Help Pgh Food Bank

We are going to need multiple masks to get through 2020. Two person aka one to wear, one to wash at a bare minimum.

Anything might work in the short-term, but over the long haul – people need to make careful choices. How do you choose the right face mask for you?

What material? Elastic or cotton? Ear loops or ties? Pleated? Filters?

Some are data based choices, but others are preferences based on our face and head size, how much hair we have, our ability to tie (& loosen) knots on the back of our heads, do we wear glasses, do we prefer minimal fabric or a large mask, do we have a washing machine and delicates bag or our bathroom sink, etc.

Since our blog loves reviews and is sponsoring the Pittsburgh MasQUe Project, we are in a good situation to offer feedback.

Unfortunately, the nature of the mask is such that we cannot donate them after testing them. We can buy some masks to try, but not all as many are available only as donations. So we are teaming up with the F. Dok Harris Initiative to make this face mask primer a win/win for everyone who wants lots of good face mask info available.

For each mask the sewists/makers/creators submit for a review, we will generate a donation to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank up to $500 total. The Food Bank can leverage $500 to purchase $2000 worth of food for our neighbors.

It is fine if you aren’t selling masks because your pattern/style will give readers information on what to shop for or make themselves.

So sending one mask for a review will educate people, promote the use of face masks, and help the Food Bank.

If you do have a retail setup, you will also send a message to customers that you are trans and queer friendly. We will include links.

To participate, email pghlesbian@gmail.com to make arrangements. We can review both adult and child sized masks. We need your mask by May 31 so we can generate the Food Bank donation in early June. We will let you know when reviews will be posted.

To summarize,

  • Any maker can submit a mask for review. If you have multiple styles, that’s fine.
  • We can review adult & child sizes.
  • Each mask submitted to us will generate a donation to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank courtesy of F. Dok Initiative.
  • We will include links to your masks, shout-outs to your volunteer projects, etc.

Let’s do this!
