Lexi, 33, was a Black Trans Woman Murdered in Harlem

I don’t have many details about the life of Lexi “Ebony” Sutton. She was 33. She has friends who mourn her. I’m not sure if Ebony was a nickname, a house affiliation, etc.

There are far too many details about the horrific murder that took her life in Harlem in the early hours of Saturday morning.

From PlanetTransgender

Witnesses told police that the woman was sitting a bench near the corner when her attacker stormed up and started arguing with her. As the two fought, the man pulled out a blade and knifed her in the neck before speeding off on a scooter.PIX 11 reports that the woman was rushed to NYC Health & Hospitals/Harlem, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The HRC reports Lexi was at work; other sources state she was a sex worker. There are few safety nets or stimulus checks for sex workers, even in a pandemic.

Lexi’s death illustrates the ugliness of a global epidemic of violence within the global health pandemic. There’s a particular vicious element in recent murders – throats slashed, people hunted down like dogs. It feels to me that the remnants of pretense have been cast aside, leaving trans women even more vulnerable. And invisible, even on this eve of the Trans Day of Visibility.

TTimeNetwork reports:

Rest in power, Lexi. You deserved a safe workplace as much as anyone. You deserved many more years to thrive in your life. I am so sorry.
