Thank you, but not this time

Sometimes I have to say “no thank you” to invitations and plans that seem quite lovely, but are overwhelming.

I appreciate being included. But it really helps me to be included in the planning so I can identify and mitigate issues.

I was invited to lunch on Saturday with Laura’s friends. They don’t know she has two other commitments beforehand and will have to race home to get me to go to a strange space for a meal much later than I normally eat lunch. Then we have plans to visit friends for dinner.

I can’t do it all. Having Laura rush around makes me anxious. My ongoing struggle with my appetite and nausea make certain restaurants undesirable. I need to conserve emotional energy for other tasks.

So I said no, thank you.

And I feel guilty. I hope they don’t make a big deal about it or interpret it as personal. I hope next time we can make a plan together that works for everyone. I hope they don’t pity me.

Anxiety sucks.
