#TakeTheHighRoad – Support LGBTQA Students at McGuffey

Gay Straight Alliance Logo

Students at McGuffey High School in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania experienced backlash to their ‘Day of Silence’ – a group of classmates organized their own “Anti-Gay” day creating an atmosphere of fear and discomfort for LGBTQA students and allies.

One tactic of the students was to wear flannel shirts and ink the phrase “anti-gay” as part of their fear-mongering approach. After talking with community organizers around the region, I am proposing that we take a stand to show our support for LGBTQA students at McGuffey High School and throughout Washington County. Both the GSA of Washington County and GLSEN – Pittsburgh agree that showing our support for students and their families is essential.

1. Take a photo – in a flannel shirt – with a sign that shows your support for the LGBTQA students at McGuffey. I suggest something like “I support LGBTQ students at McGuffey High School.”
