Sue is the founder of Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents blog, established in 2005.. She has an MSW from the University in Pittsburgh and a BA in Political Science from Marymount University. Her undergraduate claim to fame is a six month stint as an intern with then Congressman Rick Santorum in 1991. Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. She was among the first out LGBTQ people named to Pittsburgh’s 40 Under 40 in 2004 and is a graduate of Leadership Development Initiative Class VII. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. She uses both her undergraduate and graduate degrees on a regular basis as a blogger and activist and regularly circulates her 1991 internship photo just to shake things up on her social media feeds. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

Dyke March 2010 – Update

Dyke March 2010 – Update

Just made my first visit to Police HQ. They have a silly little machine to gain entrance and not-so-loveable curmudgeon at the gate.  He started the hell out of me by looming over while I was waiting for someone — anyone — to answer my button pushing.  Not a good start. I almost dropped by Blackberry […]

Kagan for Supreme Court – Stood Up for LGBTQ rights against DADT

President Obama will today nominate Elena Kagan to fill the impending vacancy on the Supreme Court. She has a bit of history with DADT that's worth reading about. More later.

Another reminder why I do this …

Another reminder why I do this …

It was nice to post “hey, I got an award” yesterday, but when I took a peek through the google searches I had a humbling reminder LGBT blogs are important  … “lesbian support in Pittsburgh” “help for runaway gay kids” “lesbian support groups” “make lesbian friends in Pittsburgh” “gay partner abuse” I hope they found answers.

I got an award! "Lesbian of the Year"

I was tremendously tickled to learn that the readers of the Keystone Alliance/Gaylife Newsletter have voted me “Lesbian of the Year” for 2010.  I am in the company of my great colleagues and friends, including:   So who are these fine folks? Together, The Keystone Alliance/GayLife Newsletter is a Multi-State, National Gay Organization. We raise […]

Meeting with Senator Specter

Saturday AM, the Arlen Specter campaign hosted an LGBT reception in Shadyside.  Ledcat and I stopped by. We had a delightful conversation with Lt. Governor candidate Jonathan Saidal (read about him here) who is a bright, witty man. Put him in a room with State Senator Daylin Leach and you'd have a pretty erudite room […]

Live Blogging/Tweeting Monday's Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art

Ledcat and I are thrilled to have been invited back to live blog the fantastic “Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art” auction to benefit Persad Center.  We had a lot of fun last year.  It was an honor to be invited back and this year we'll incorporate live tweeting @PghLesbian24 and @Ledcat.  And don't forget to support […]

From the PG – When My Daughter Came Out

From the PG – When My Daughter Came Out

This was a lovely little piece to read this morning when I cracked open the Post-Gazette. A mother reflects on her reaction to her daughter's coming out …. not simply on how it made her (mom) feel, but what her (mom's) response meant for her daughter. The parent of a gay child can lose that child in […]

State Rep Harry Readshaw teams up with Darryl Metcalfe? Really?

State Rep Harry Readshaw teams up with Darryl Metcalfe? Really?

On that critical Pennsylvania issue … immigration reform. State Reps. Daryl Metcalfe and Harry Readshaw think Pennsylvania should follow Arizona's lead and “protect its borders and citizens” by giving local and state police more power to arrest, detain and eventually deport foreigners who have entered the state illegally and don't have proper registration papers.   […]
