Sue is the founder of Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents blog, established in 2005.. She has an MSW from the University in Pittsburgh and a BA in Political Science from Marymount University. Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. She was among the first out LGBTQ people named to Pittsburgh’s 40 Under 40 in 2004 and is a graduate of Leadership Development Initiative Class VII. In 2015, she launched the #AMPLIFY LGBTQ archive in conjunction with a two-year artist in residence stint with Most Wanted Fine Art. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. PLC absorbed the #PghCatFolx projects. She uses both her undergraduate and graduate degrees on a regular basis as a blogger and activist and regularly circulates her 1991 internship photo just to shake things up on her social media feeds. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

DADT

DADT

Well … where to begin.  At last count, I have 600 email messages about DADT in my box and reading through them is dizzying.  The Pentagon study endorsed the repeal of DADT, finding that 70 of enlisted mend women essentially see no negative impact.  70 percent.  The Pentagon recognizes that repeal decisions from the courts […]

Those personal moments of discrimination

Those personal moments of discrimination

Just when I think I'm pretty accepted in mainstream society, I get a humbling reminder of my second class citizenship. I can't be very specific, but I was asked to hide my identity as a lesbian in a certain situation.  That never feels good.  I told you when my sister-in-law asked me to take down […]

Ohio Lesbian Wants to Return to West Point as Openly Gay Woman

Ohio Lesbian Wants to Return to West Point as Openly Gay Woman

The PG has the story. We are all waiting for the Defense Department report on Tuesday regarding the repeal of DADT.  Recent court decisions and increasing pressure from the LGBT community that President Obama keep his promise to repeal have spurred our legislators to repeal under their own terms, instead of judicial terms.  Good?  Bad?  […]

World AIDS Day in Pittsburgh

World AIDS Day in Pittsburgh

Complacency about HIV and AIDS will prove deadly. Wednesday December 1 is World AIDS Day and Pittsburgh groups are banding together to ensure the region does not take a sigh of relief on this issue.  People are still dying.  People are living with medical advancements, but face barriers to the lives we take for granted. […]

A Lesbian Thanksgiving

A Lesbian Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving is pretty nice. We all have small families so we all gather together (my parents, Ledcat's mother, her brother and his family, our sister-in-law's mother) wherever dinner might be.  This year, we headed north to Mercer County. There's no real huge lesbian element to the holiday.  We've been together for 7 years so no […]

Comments

I'm going back to anonymous comments because it is a bit cumbersome to register and post a comment.  Let's try to act with some maturity.  You can still use your real name.  There are two or three people who post repeatedly and it is obvious who they are.  Don't ruin it for everyone.  Say what […]

Being “Other”

Being “Other”

It really sucks when someone bluntly tells you that you aren't part of the group.  I had this happen yesterday when someone didn't like a piece I wrote and told me that I was not part of their group because I didn't participate enough, nothing personal.  Ha. That person clearly doesn't read my blog, because […]

i am willing to sell out

i am willing to sell out

Bram was sharing his Sonoma Grill adventures (restaurant review in return for a gift card to raffle off to readers). It occurs to me that I am really ripe for some opportunities to burst the illusion of noble blogger.  Beyond lesbianism, I've lost nearly 50 pounds in 8 months. Think of all the opportunities … Dicks  – […]

Personal catch up

Personal catch up

Just had coffee with Bram from The Pittsburgh Comet.  It was nice to stretch blogging and political muscles that have been a little cramped lately.  So, the diet and exercise regimen continues.  I am closing in on the 50 lb mark which is pretty awesome.  That is not my final goal, but I certainly intend […]
