Freedom Isn’t Free: Invest in the Work of POC in Our Community

Today is the Fourth of July and many of us are celebrating and/or enjoying the relative degree of freedom we have as American citizens.

Not everyone is free and not everyone saw independence in 1776 or anytime soon after. The enslavement of African peoples as well as the eradication of Native Americans indigenous to these lands are harrowing reminders that our freedom is a complicated legacy entwined with their ongoing oppression.

I’m savvy enough to realize that for most people this is about family time, fun and fireworks while for others the focus is on veterans. Most of us don’t take it deeper than that.

So I’m inviting you to dig deeper this year and consider a donation to one of the following. Make it an opportunity to remind yourself that freedom isn’t free by investing in the lives of people around us whose journey to today was not the same as yours.
