We All Want To Go Back to Graduate School

Daily Prompt: What’s your learning style? Do you prefer learning in a group and in an interactive setting? Or one-on-one? Do you retain information best through lectures, or visuals, or simply by reading books?

I’m going to take the middle road and say “both.”

I love to read. It’s fair to say I’ve learned more from books than interactive groups simply because I’ve read so many. This served me well through high school and into college. But when I began graduate school at LSU (the one where I dropped out of a la another post), I gained a deep appreciation for group discussion and interactive learning. I was enraptured by the conversations we had, the opportunity to really hear what other people drew from these books and to be invited to share my own thoughts. It was exhilarating and an experience that’s never been recreated since, even when I returned to graduate school at Pitt for a different degree.

I like lectures, but I tend to focus on one element – a phrase, a sentence, a thought and lose site of the big picture. So online videos are useful for me, especially to revisit a lecture I personally attended. For some reason, I don’t access videos very often but that’s probably a different blog post.

So my ideal learning setting? Read a book or article, attend a lecture with a Q&A and then participate in a small discussion group with my peers. You know. Graduate school.

For the record, Ledcat often says the same thing about her law school years.
