Election Wrap Up

There are simply no words to describe how I feel to know that Bill Peduto is the Mayor-Elect of Pittsburgh.

As a woman, a lesbian, a social worker and a person living with a disability  – I just can’t find the right words. Relief? Thankful? Even hopeful?

Other notable electoral news across the queerosphere

Openly lesbian Anmise Parker was reelected to her third term as Mayor of Houston

Seattle elected their first openly gay  Mayor, Ed Murray.

In North Carolina, THREE openly LGBTQ candidates won their elections for local races. From LGBTQ Nation’s reporting:

  • Incumbent City Councilmember LaWana Mayfield handily won reelection in Charlotte
  • Incumbent Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt won 90% of the vote
  • In nearby Carrboro, with all precincts reporting, incumbent town Alderwoman Lydia Lavelle garnered 96 percent of the voter in her uncontested race for mayor.

In Texas, House candidate Celia Israel advanced to a December run-off in the Austin-based 50th District, and would be the second openly LGBT member of the state’s House if elected.

The Victory Fund identified and supported many local races across the nation, including these in Pennsylvania.

PA-Benjamin Allatt-Harrisburg City Council, At-Large-WIN

PA-Ernie Schlegel-Reading City Council-LOSS

PA-Lori Schreiber-Abington Township Commission-WIN

PA-Mimi DeSouza-Norristown Borough Council-LOSS

I shared them all because it’s terrific to see how many openly LGBTQ persons ran for office in our state and 1/3 of them won. Here’s hoping we continue to have candidates stand for election and more currently elected officials come out while in office.
