The Week in LGBTQ – February 17, 2013

Laurel from Pam’s House Blend takes a look at the Gallup poll results on the number of LGBTQ This Weekpersons in each state. She questions if the data reflects actual disparities in the number of LGBTQ residents in the respective states OR the willingness to openly identify as LGBTQ in more repressive environments. Take a look at the comments for an engaging dialogue on this topic. For the record, PA came in at number #43 – 2.7% of those surveyed identify as LGBTQ. Huh.

Back2Stonewall highlights a UK study that finds rates of HIV infection are on the rise among gay and bisexual men – due to less frequent use of condoms. This is a very serious health crisis for our community.

Feministing has the scoop from Stephanie Fiagrelle, one of the women whose photo was mistakenly used to promote traditional marriage by good ole Fox News. Fiagrelle and her wife are on their honeymoon, but she had some thoughtful feedback for others who face backlash for not conforming to gender expectation.

Bilerico’s team takes a look at the ludicrous notion that “the gays” are to blame for the demise of Olympic wrestling. Sigh.

From the AP: The Massachusetts Department of Education on Friday issued directives for handling transgender students, including allowing them to use the bathrooms or play on the sports teams that correspond to the gender with which they identify.

Professional soccer player, Robbie Rogers, came out then retired and is now being pursued by a Chicago team to play.
